Istanbul – for an exotic New Year

This magical metropolis pulsates with cosmopolitan energy at New Year. Turkey’s largest city is transcontinental, straddling the immense Bosphorus river, where Europe and Asia meet, delivering a unique flavour to the biggest party night of the year.

Bars and restaurants typically spill out into the streets before midnight; yet for the ultimate luxurious celebration, avoid the city crowds and the mayhem of the main Taksim Square. Instead head for the rooftops. Yes, dine in style in one of Istanbul’s world-class restaurants with privileged views across domes and minarets. Enjoy a stellar menu that fuses the best from Mediterranean and Asian cuisine whilst watching exploding fireworks filling the sky.

Mutlu Yıllar!

Paris – for a sparkling New Year

There’s no better way to welcome in the New Year than with a glass of vintage French champagne in hand. Bid farewell to the old year and welcome the new in Paris, the world’s most romantic city.

As a capital of couture and cuisine, this is the place to really dress up for a truly elegant and opulent party. Whilst the Champs-Elysees might be packed with people and merriment, the privileged enjoy the finest the city has to offer. Whether it’s an elite River Cruise, classic gala dinner at one of the city’s fine hotels, or a decadent party in a sexy, bohemian quarter like Montmartre, New Year’s Eve in Paris is always unforgettable.

Bonne Année!

Venice – for a glamorous New Year

For centuries, Venice has been the city of fairytale balls, mysterious masquerades and sumptuous galas enjoyed by the world’s aristocracy and elite. This seductive city with its majestic architecture and labyrinthine canals is the classic destination for a glamorous New Year’s Eve celebration.

From an Italian opera concert at ‘Teatro La Fenice’, to fireworks and Bellini cocktails in ‘Piazza San Marco’, seeing in the new year here is a truly intoxicating experience for the senses. So if you have a New Year’s Day hangover, the tradition is to take a bracing dip in the Adriatic!

Buon Anno!

Rio de Janeiro – for a sexy New Year

Brazilians certainly know how to party, as anyone who has experienced Carnival will testify. New Year’s Eve here is no exception, as the festival of Réveillon in Brazil welcomes not only the new year but summer too.

In Rio the streets fill with Samba dancing and music, whilst millions head to the iconic Copacabana Beach, dressed in white for good luck, to party till dawn.

The city’s world-famous fireworks are launched from barges in the bay and explode to light up the skyline and the unmistakable Sugarloaf Mountain.

Feliz Ano Novo!

New York City – for an urban New Year

From ice skating at the Rockefeller Center to the wondrous festive luxury store window displays of Fifth Avenue, NYC is truly magical at New Year.

Since 1907 the city’s Times Square has been the focus of US celebrations, with the lowering of the iconic illuminated crystal ball at the turn of midnight.

With over 8 million people calling this mega city home, and as one of the world’s top tourist destinations, thousands fill the icy cold New year’s Eve streets. So this special night in NYC is best enjoyed in one of the city’s extraordinarily lavish restaurants and exclusive nightclubs. Your luxury hotel concierge opens the door to VIP access to the city’s most select parties in Chelsea and the Meatpacking District, so you can dine, dance and usher in the New Year in true urban style.

Happy New Year!

Sierra Nevada, Andalucia – winter sun and snow!

Spain is more than just sun and sea; it is in fact one of Europe’s most mountainous countries with world-class peaks and more than a dozen winter sports resorts, including the slopes of Sierra Nevada, in Andalucia’s Granada Province.

Andalucía’s Sierra Nevada is southern Europe’s winter wonderland. Its main ski village of Pradollano sits at some 2100 metres, that’s over 700 metres higher than the UK’s loftiest peak of Ben Nevis. Taking the gondolas and lifts to the slopes, takes you even higher. The Laguna lift for example, heads towards the peak of Valeta, bringing you to almost 3000 metres – breathtaking!

Here is a recent piece of mine focusing on this beautiful area, close to the ancient, culturally rich city of Granada in Andalucia, Spain.

Sierra Nevada has over 39 pistes, 100 kilometres of runs and some 44 lifts, and a season that extends until well after Easter.

Traditionally Pradollano has been the ‘cheep and cheerful’ face of Spanish winter sports, but now the village boasts a choice of posh chalets, upscale lodges, 4 star hotels, spas, and also the 5 star Vincci Selection Hotel Rumaykiyya which captures the flavour of an Alpine retreat. The hotel offers guests suites, large family rooms and duplexes for those special family holidays and festive celebrations. The rooms and alpine balconies look out onto the sierra, so you can catch the sunrise reflecting off the piste, and at the end of the day enjoy a glass in hand, as the sunsets behind the mountain – it’s a magical spot.

…once the door of ‘Dar Sultan’ opens and you step inside this charming French-run maison d’hôte you instantly relax. Jean Pierre & Maité Durand were pioneers in Tangiers ten years ago when they opened this historic Riad. Public spaces and guest rooms are beautifully furnished with personal attention to detail. From fresh Moroccan roses in the rooms, to traditional argan oil soap in the bathrooms, one easily feels pampered and immersed in the magic of the Kingdom of Morocco.
