The intelligentsia, bohemians, artists and the rich of New York City regularly went to the Hamptons, in upstate New York for weekends and holidays; escaping to understated mansions and modest beach homes. The enclave was ‘fashionably unfashionable’ and very discreet; the perfect antidote to life in New York City.
Sotogrande might be seen as much the same; elegant mansions and designer homes are discreetly masked by high walls, tall trees or hedges and there is real absence of the glamorous nightclubs and champagne-spraying beach bars that one might find in Marbella. Playing with a coined phrase, is it true to say that the ‘somebodies go to Sotogrande to enjoy being ‘nobodies’, whilst the ‘nobodies’ go to Marbella to be ‘somebodies’?
