5 JOURNALISM SPAIN LUXURY BOUTIQUE HOTELS ANDREW FORBES

Ibiza – ‘White Island Style’, discovering some of the inimitable style and elegance of Ibiza, the jewel of the Balearics.

My enchanting suite was evocatively called ‘Java’; just one of the magical guest rooms at Can Xuxu, a luxury, boutique property that provides a highly personalised experience for its privileged guests. The 19th century finca is described as ‘a boutique villa, combining the atmosphere of a private residence with the service of a luxury hotel’.

The owner and host, Alexandre a former fashion designer, has brought his French flair to the island with the creation of Can Xuxu. Here he has successfully pulled together the Ibiza laid back chic style with modern, ethnic and Mediterranean touches.

‘Java’ is one of the antique wooden pavilions that Alexandre has brought back from his regular trips to Indonesia, adding to the unique flavour and ambiance of this island hideaway. Each of the wooden guest houses features one-off furniture, accessories and a king size bed, dressed with cool white linens, and crowned with a mosquito net.

Outside one discovers the completely private, open air bathrooms, with exquisite river stone floors, hardwood furniture and wash basins hewn from stone. Details include miniature amenities from luxury island perfumery, ‘Hierbas de Ibiza’.

Each guest suite in this intimate hotel is unique in construction and decoration; there is a stand alone luxury suite with its own private plunge pool; south east Asian teak pavilions, as well as additional guest rooms in the former farmhouse: together with relaxing indoor and outdoor guest areas and chill out corners.

The heart of the property is the dining pavilion and its adjacent open air kitchen, terrace and seductive swimming pool, lined with Asian day beds, sofas and sun loungers, covered in pristine white cushions with batik accents, and flowing linen curtains.

Alexandre’s small multi lingual team offer breakfast, lunch, as well as weekly brunch and dinner. Although it is hard to resist the temptation to stay cocooned in this lush, sub tropical paradise, Ibiza  is celebrated for its restaurants and music, so it’s worth heading out.

In addition to the clubs in San Antonio or Ibiza town, try ‘KM5’, a restaurant close by, that combines dining with a boutique, art gallery and chill out garden lounge for music. It has quickly captured the imagination of locals and visitors alike and regularly hosts some of the coolest DJs.

Alternatively, for an even more laid back bite to eat, try the local tapas bars in the nearby town of San Jose, including the popular ‘Destino’.

Relaxation comes quickly here at CanXuxu in the Mediterranean sun, with the scents of orange blossom, rosemary and lavender and views of the island’s rugged landscape. There is also a stunning terrace with expansive views down to crystal clear Cala Tarida and the island of Coneje beyond – a perfect spot to enjoy a sundowner cocktail.

Simplicity, luxury and originality– that’s the style of the isla blanca, Ibiza.
